Hiring Salespeople who Understand Social Selling

Hiring Salespeople who Understand Social SellingHiring Salespeople who Understand Social SellingHiring Salespeople who Understand Social Selling Meerman Scott, author of The New Rules of Sales Service(Wiley, 2014)The old model of a successful salesperson was somebody who was very diligent at dialing for dollars. That person had to be tenacious and able to tolerate many people saying no (some with rudeness). With the new approaches of consultative selling, agile sales, and real-time engagement, sales managersneed to look for a new platzdeckchen of skills when hiring salespeople. Our best people get on the phones and build trust as step one, says HubSpots Mark Roberge, who has hired hundreds of salespeople. So when hiring salespeople, what do you look for in order to differentiate those who act like good doctors?A couple of decades ago, it was someone who was just smart enough to be able to memorize the 10-page sales playbook and display the aggressiveness of a varsity football captain. T his was someone who could get pummeled to the ground 10 times but never failed to get up, and worked tirelessly to make it happen, Roberge says.Weve moved away from that. Ive had management consultants come onboard as salespeople. Ive hadMBAs come onboard. Ive had engineers come onboard. They have a higher degree of business acumen. They have a quicker learning curve. They have a higher level of intelligence. And they can come near the status of a consultant or advisor with the buyers that they are speaking to.Social Media Meets SalesThe other significant attributes of a successful salesperson are social media skillsand an existing network of contacts.Greg Alexander from Sales Benchmark Indexsays a persons network of angeschlossen contacts is a new set of competencies that should be considered during the hiring process. He calls this someones social personal branding the ability to create and perpetuate a digital brand that portrays expertise. If you are a salesperson trying to open up a new account, expect the decision maker at that kompetenzprofil new client to Google you before the initial appointment.Whats your online brand? Previously you didnt have to care about that. Why? The way you made a first impression years ago was you wore a blue suit, white shirt, and red tie you shined your shoes, brushed your teeth, and combed your hair, and you had a shave. You had a firm handshake, and you looked somebody in their eyes, and this made your first impression. That first impression today now happens online.Creating a First Impression OnlineBecause of that new competency, Roberge and Alexander advocate that organizations clearly define that making a great first impression online should be a requirement when hiring salespeople. What social personalbranding attributes should you research before considering someone for a position?Depending on the type of company, you should consider LinkedIn connections, Twitter followers, content creation via social platforms like b logs and YouTube, and more. If you run an existing sales team, you might benchmark a prospective new employees social personal brand against the salespeople who have achieved the greatest success through social selling.Alexander says social personal branding is so critical today because of the nature of sales referrals. Because of this, it is essential to hire people with the largest potential referral networks already in place.I might say, Hey, Joe, I noticed in your network that you know Mike Smith, who works at this company. We do work for companies like that. Mike might be experiencing these problems. We have expertise in these areas, and we would like to meet him. Would you be kind enough to provide an introduction? Thats social referral generation. Thats a whole new set of skills required by salespeople. The organizations that are doing that well are producing phenomenal sales results. As critical new skills become important in the new social selling model, you need to ensure y oure hiring the right people.Over time, you might need to consider if your existing people are right for the new realities. Are they able to adapt? What about the team that manages the salespeople? Are your sales leaders the right people to carry your company forward?Author BioDavid Meerman Scottis an internationally acclaimed marketing and sales strategist whose books and blog are must-reads for professionals seeking to generate attention in ways that grow their business. Wildlife Forensic Scientist Salary and Career

Wildlife Forensic Scientist Salary and CareerWildlife Forensic Scientist Salary and CareerWildlife forensic scientists analyze biological samples that have been collected as evidence and apply procedures to investigate crimes against wildlife. Duties The primary duty of a wildlife forensic scientist is to conduct laboratory analysis of samples collected as evidence in cases that involve wildlife. This lab analysis may include evaluation of samples involved in cases of poaching, smuggling, animal cruelty, bioterrorism, oil spills, or other ecological disasters. After analyzing the evidence and writing a report, a forensic scientist may be called to testify in a court as an expert witness. Wildlife forensic scientists must be prepared to develop new techniques and approaches when they are asked to examine unusual or unique samples. They must also comply with many established guidelines and regulations that govern the proper testing and handling of samples. Wildlife forensic scienti sts work in conjunction with wildlife inspectors, fish and game wardens, assekuranzbrief officers, and others who collect evidence in cases involving wildlife. While they generally leave a collection of samples in the field to the previously mentioned professionals, a wildlife forensic scientist may be called out to assist field work on occasion. Most of their work, however, is conducted in a laboratory setting. A standard 40 hour work week allows forensic scientists to keep regular office hours. Career Options Wildlife forensic scientists may find work with a variety of employers including federal, state, and local government agencies. The techniques utilized during wildlife forensic work are also readily transferable to other related areas, such as human forensic science or other careers involving laboratory analysis. Education Training A background in forensic science, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, animal science, or a related field is preferable for those seeking po sitions in this field. A Bachelor of Science degree is the minimum educational requirement for careers in forensic science, and many wildlife forensic scientists have earned more advanced degrees (Masters or Ph.D.). As with most career paths, individuals with advanced education and training have access to the best job prospects. Wildlife forensic scientists should also have excellent analytical skills, a good working knowledge of how to use lab equipment, and experience with computer-based technology. An impressive assortment of laboratory equipment is necessary for specimen analysis, and the forensic scientist must know the proper use of each machine and the extent of its capabilities. The Society for Wildlife Forensic Science (SWFS) offers professional certification to wildlife forensic scientists who meet the groups certification criteria. Applicants must have a B.S. in a relevant field and at least one year of casework experience to qualify for the SWFS certification process. Ad ditionally, the applicant must pass a proficiency exam, complete a performance evaluation, and provide a letter of recommendation from a supervisor in the field. Salary The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not provide specific salary information for wildlife forensic scientists, but it does collect data for the more general category of forensic science technicians. During the survey conducted in 2017, the median salary for forensic science technicians was $57,850 per year ($27.81 per hour). The lowest paid ten percent of all forensic science technicians earned less than $33,880 per year, while the highest paid ten percent of all forensic science technicians earned more than $95,600 per year. Those scientists working in the Federal government receive many benefits in plus-rechnen to basic salary including vacation and sick days, paid holidays, access to federal retirement plan options, and access to a variety of health insurance plans. Career Outlook The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that the growth for forensic science technician careers will increase at a rate of 17 percent over the decade from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all positions in the most recent BLS study. Candidates with advanced experience and education will enjoy the strongest job prospects in the field of wildlife forensic science. The illegal wildlife trade will continue to drive the need for qualified wildlife forensic scientists to evaluate seized samples and appear in court cases as expert witnesses.

Couldnt take a vacation Make the most of the rest of summer

Couldnt take a vacation Make the most of the rest of summerCouldnt take a vacation Make the most of the rest of summerResearch has found that 52% of Americans didnt use all of their vacation days in 2017. So chances are, you may not have been able to take a vacation this summer. But you dont have to give up on having free time during the warmer months just yet. Here are five ways to make the most of the remaining weeks we have left of the season.Work from home on a WednesdayThis reportedly is even better than working from home on a Monday or Friday (because your manager might be more on board), for a variety of reasons including the fact that you get the convenience of staying at home during the middle of the week, even though it hasnt wrapped up yet.So the next time youre feeling burnt out this summer, consider asking your boss if you can clock in and out from home on a Wednesday. It might just be the break you need.Take a long weekendCall up a few friends and see if theyre available to take off on a Thursday and/or Friday and head somewhere special with you. Whether you decide to take a picnic tothe beach, take a road trip to the mountains or go on a retreat, youre sure to have a blast with the people you love the most.Get ready to make memories that will last for years to come.Just remember, its crucial to book a place to stay before Labor Day weekend hits in a few weeks, and everyone is trying to get away for a long weekend of their own. Also, keep in mind that solo tripsare a refreshing option.Go on a staycationWhether you take a day off during the work week to relax or take an entire weekend, consider going on a staycation where you live. Its a great way to save money and carve out time for self-care and relaxation practices after a brutal week.Get to know your surroundings a little better by visiting local attractions, dining at restaurants youve never been to before, and spending time in nature.Throw a dinner party on a Saturday nightNo time for a staycat ion or a long weekend? Why not get everyone together for a dinner party at your place? It can be as formal or as casual as you want- being surrounded by your favorite foods and people is whatreally counts, of course.Just have everyone bring a different entree, drink or nachtisch (which, lets be real, they can buy if theyre not ready to show off their cooking chops), and enjoy them as the night unfolds.Spend time with your kids before the back-to-school seasonOnce your kids head back to college, thats it Unless they live at home and commute to school, chances are, you wont be seeing them until Thanksgiving rolls around. So you should make an effort to fit in a little more quality time in before theyre swamped with work, heaps of social plansand extracurriculars. This is a good way to tie up any loose ends after the summer months, which can feel both too long and too short at the same time.

Rich parents want their kids to get their first job in middle school

Rich parents want their kids to get their first job in middle schoolRich parents want their kids to get their first job in middle schoolRich Millennials are expecting to bankroll their childrens futures in unprecedented ways - but their generosity comes with strings, according to a new survey.More than half of millennials - or 56% - say they expect to foot the bill for their childrens college, compared to just 42% of Gen X parents, and just 23% of Baby Boomers. Millennials also expect to pick up the tab for their childrens rent, home purchases, and wedding costsmore frequently than earlier generations - expressing an open-wallet policy with their kids even into their 30s and beyond, according to thedigital wealth management firm Personal CapitalsAffluent Family Finances Survey,Still, parents have some serious expectations connected to their largesse. Survey responses show 67% of parents of all ages say they believe their kids should get a job as early as middle or high school, co mpared to just 12% who say they believe their kids should wait until after college to work. The study, carried out by ORC International, surveyed 1,001 millennial, Gen X, and Baby Boomer parents in the US with assets of $500,000 and up. The survey distinguishesbetween affluent and high wealth parents, who were described as having at least $3 million in investable assets.Heres when rich parents think kids should abflug workingSeventy-one percent of parents surveyed in the Baby Boomer generation think children should start working while in high school, versus 56% of those in Gen X, and 40% of millennial parents. Its unclear how many of those kids actually have a job, given that a report based on government surveys of American high school students found the number of teens who had ever earned money from working dropped from 76% in the 1970s to just 55% in 2010.Affluent parents, across generations, are feeling increasing pressure from their children to provide longer term support, Personal Capital CEO Jay Shah said in a statement.Personal Capital found that 19% of surveyed affluent parents plan to support their kids until they hit 30 and older, and 97% say theyll leave behind an inheritance, as91% of those surveyed said that the sum would be at least $100,000.Why kids arent working as much as they used toWhile the Personal Capital research didnt address the specific types of jobs affluent parents want their kids to work, the idea of parents wanting their children to do so at earlier ages reflects the reality that teens in the US arent working as much now as in the past.Bloomberg reported in June of this year that teen employment has plunged since the 1990s, citing data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. When recessions hit, in the early 1990s, early 2000s, and from 2007 to 2009, teen labor participation rates plunge. As the economy recovers, though, teen labor doesnt bounce back, Bloomberg reported. The current projections for teen employment continue to plummet, wit h the rate of teens working during the peak summer months expected to drop to less than 27% in 2024 - down from almost 70% in 1988 and 1989,Bloomberg reported.Among the theories on what could be driving down teen employment include an increasing need for older Americans to hang on to their jobs and an increase in parents crowding kids schedules with activities and volunteer work that might look good to colleges.Other researchersspeculated that the drop in teen jobs is linked to todays teens remaining in a suspended state of extended childhood.Financial literacy starts at homeIts possible that part of the divide between kids and self-sufficiency around money stems from parents reluctance to let their kids in on honest conversations about cash.Just half of the affluent parents surveyed report that their kids are aware of their salary, and 47% report that their kids know how much their net worth is.Parents who have $3 million or more in combined assets are more likely to hide their sa lary from their kids, the study found. The first step is for families to start conversations about family financesand legacy planning, Shah said.Ron Lieber, the New York TimesYour Money Columnist and author of the book The Opposite of Spoiled Raising Kids Who Are Grounded, Generous and Smart about Money, writes that making financial conversations part of daily life is the best way to get kids - and parents - comfortable with the topic.Every conversation about money is also about values. Allowance is also about patience. Giving is about generosity. Work is about perseverance. Negotiating their wants and needs and the difference between the two has a lot to do with thrift and prudence, Lieber writes.Parents may not be doing their kids any favorsIn the Personal Capital survey, astaggering 70% of parents in the millennial generation say that when it comes to saving up, they would prioritize putting money toward their childs college schooling instead of their own retirement. And 48%of a ll parents surveyed agreed. But financial analysts warn that this kind of generosity is short-sighted, since this could prove to be a big mistake if these children end up supporting their parents in old age. Remember, you can always borrow for college - you cant for retirement. That makes the following finding even more concerningA 2016 Personal Capital surveyreportedly found that 40% of millennials dont have even one retirement savings account.

Why work experience works

Why work experience works Why Work Experience WorksPosted October 13, 2011, by Josie Chun While opening envelopes, getting coffees, photocopying endless documents and doing other mundane jobs all for no or minimal pay may landseem like a fast track to nowhere, just remember that even the most successful people have been there. For many, work experience is a rite of passage to a stellar career think of it as short-term grunt work for long-term gain. The benefits of work experience Youll never be motivated to work for nothing (or close to it) if you see it as a dead end, so focus on the long-term pay-offs. It gives you a sneak peak inside industries, gets your foot in the door for any entry-level jobs that may pop up, gives you valuable contacts and, at the very least, gives you something to put on your resume. People from every industry will often tell you that work experience played a big role in getting them to where they are today. Whilst a university degree assisted me greatly , the importance of kralles-on experience can never be underestimated. Every university holiday, I would participate in work experience in the industry, says Channel Ten news presenter Natarsha Belling. Its integral, both for the experience and for building contacts. None of my work experience was paid, but people do notice when you put in time and effort and will reward you in turn, says Jordana Rooz, who dedicated 12 unpaid months of her life to ACP Magazines before landing a job. Find out what you want and dont want Sometimes finding out what you dont want to do can be just as valuable as discovering what you do want. If your first weeks on the job make you want to run away screaming, you can safely cross it off your list of dream gigs before you waste any more time pursuing it. What I always say to young people, particularly school students, is to come and do work experience in my office and see what you think, says former Democrat leader Natasha Stott Despoja. Get your foot in the door If you have some idea of where youd like to head in your career, suss out the organisations you would like to work for and see if you can start doing work experience for them part-time while youre still studying. Getting your foot in the door early could mean you walk straight into a job after you graduate. Heather Lash, a publishing coordinator at ACP, did work experience one day a week for 10 months while studying interior design and marketing/events management, then worked part-time in the marketing department for eight months before landing her full-time coordinator position. We at ACP have opportunities for students to gain experience in design and editorial work, so we generally prefer tertiary students who are studying those fields, says Lash. Landing a work experience gig Getting work experience can be a little like looking for a full-time paid job. In some industries, landing placements can be very competitive. Magazine publishing houses, for example, have aspirin g writers and editors queuing up just to obtain the privilege of opening letters and photocopying invoices. I knew from the time I began my undergrad degree that publishing wasnt going to be the easiest job market to get into. I learnt this first hand just trying to get work experience, says Jordana Rooz. ACP receives frequent requests from people seeking work experience especially with their popular fashion magazines. They accept work experience students from Year 10 onwards and dont have specific requirements, but they like to see people who show initiative. Its always great when a young person takes the initiative to make contact with us themselves instead of through a parent or educational institution, says Heather Lash. Get organised So write up a list of places you are keen to check out, then give them a call or send them an email explaining a bit about yourself and why you want to do work experience with them. If you already have some work experience, attach a resume so they can see why you would be suitable, and show them that you are serious about pursuing a career in the industry. Work experience can really pay off, just as it did for Lash. It just shows what work experience can lead to if you take the initiative to organise it yourself. I wasnt required to do work experience for my studies it was something I took on for my own gain. The incredible benefits of making people feel seen and heard

The incredible benefits of making people feel seen and heardThe incredible benefits of making people feel seen - and heardThe discussion was impassioned and heated. And while I had notlage initiated the debate, I unconsciously slid into an old habit of jumping into the fray.I started to share my perspective when a woman named Audrey abruptly turned away from me and started to make her case to someone else in our group. I tried to make eye contact but she wouldnt look at me. I called her by name but she ignored me.In that moment, when Audrey turned around and did not answer me, I felt the rage that comes from being unacknowledged, invisible, nonexistent.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreGenerally, I have the incredible fortune of living my life with rank and privilege. I am CEO of a company, an advisor to senior leaders, and I write about, and teach, leadership. My experience is one of being acknowledged, answered, seen, and heard. But in that discussion, for the briefest of moments, I dipped my toe into the sea of disregard that so many swim in all their lives. The effects of being ignoredDr. Kipling Williamss research on the effects of being ignored and excluded reveal an unsurprising truth being ignored hurts. And it instigates behavior (often anti-social) thats meant to recover your existence. In other words, people who are ignored will do things that cannot be ignored. There is no greater obligation that we have as leaders, than to see those around us. Not just glance their way but give them the experience of being fully seen. The opposite of invisible. This, Kiplings research suggests, leads to social attentiveness and pro-social behaviors. The opposite of our reaction to invisibility.Think about your colleagues. And about your employees, including the most juniorchef among them. Think about your clients or customers. Think about people you work with of a different culture, race, or background, a different social status or education.Do they feel seen by you? Heard by you?Our sacred (and very practical) obligation as leaders is to see and hear the people around us. Which, at times, can be hard. How to see the people around youBut nothing could be simpler Ask questions and listen to the answers.Let the tone of your questions be curiosity, not interrogation. This wont just help you understand the opinions of the people around you, it will help you understand them. How did they come to hold that view? What is behind it? Who are they?In other words, while their opinions might inform you, and maybe even influence your opinions and decisions, your listening will also give them an experience of being seen and heard.Peoples opinions, especially strongly felt ones, are a window into their soul. You will hear their longings, their fears, their uncertainties and struggles. Understand what that opinion says about who they are, what they care abou t. Why it matters to them so much. You will see them and they will feel seen. There are millions of people, some of them in your company, who rarely feel seen or heard from leadership. Life is about creating yourself George Bernard ShawFrom the first moment your head lifts off the pillow every morning, you are constantly bombarded by negative messages from society and media telling you that youre not good enough. This isnt anything new.If you really think about it, from the momen t you were born, you had a positive can do outlook on life. That is until people around you spoke negative words that stuck in your mind. Then you stopped believing in yourself. One of the best ways to reverse this negativity is to practice daily positive self-talk. This isnt some law of attraction magical woo-woo strategy, the power of self-talk and perception is also backed by proven science. 1David Sarwer, psychologist and clinical director at the Center for Weight and Eating Disorders at the University of Pennsylvania uses self-talk strategies to help his new weight loss clients achieve their health goals.Heres how it worksDavid Sarwer gets his clients to stand in front of the mirror and then encourages them to use more gentle, neutral language as they evaluate their bodies.Instead of speaking negatively about their body, My abdomen is disgusting and grotesque, Sarwer prompts them to say instead that My abdomen is round, my abdomen is big its bigger than Id like it to be.His goal is to remove the negative and pejorative terms from the patients self-talk.Sarwer believes that the weight loss client must change their perception of their body to achieve and sustain their health goals. 2I personally used a similar strategy to get over my fear and self-doubt of writing my first book and public speaking. I struggled to meet my deadlines because of the self doubts that my work wouldnt be good enough to be shared with the public. To combat this as an experiment, I would stand in front of the mirror every morning and speak positive words about my abilities as a writer and a speaker. As soon as my self-image changed, my actions followed swiftly.Within 3 to 6 months I self published my first book, delivered a 20-minute speech in front of a hundred plus strong audience and launched some small business projects. You can use this strategy as well.PracticeSet a 2-5 minutes timer as soon as you wake up and before going to bed everyday. Stand in front of the mirror and simply b egin to talk to yourself with positive words counteracting your self-doubts.For example, instead of telling yourself that my work isnt good enough simply switch it around and tell yourself that my work is unique and good enough to be shared with the world.Rinse and repeat for 30 days.Remember that youre not lying to yourself here. Youre simply reminding yourself of the truth about your capabilities before your mind was heavily bombarded with negativity as a child.2. Let Go Of Negative People in Your LifeDont waste another minute dealing with a toxic, negative, energy-draining person. Some people are wired for negativity. They love being argumentative, combative and abusive. zustrom for your life as quickly as possible.- Les BrownThese are the people you may know who always have something negative to say about your goals and aspirations. Alwayshatingwithout giving any positive criticism. The less time you spend around these schrift of negative people, the less self-doubt you will str uggle with and the more you will believe in yourself.Research has shown that negativity is contagious, just like a cold or flu.Psychologist Elaine Hatfield has found through studies that we have a tendency to mimic the body language, feel emotional displays and experiences of people we spend time with- especially, negative people. 3Yes its tough to let go of negative friends particularly those youve known them for years. But, how can you inspire your friend to become a better person if being around their negativity is holding you back from success?By setting tight boundaries in the relationship and reducing the time spent with them, you stand a much better chance of achieving your goals and inspiring them to become a better person in the process.3. Focus on the small steps with a long-term perspective. If you spend an extra hour each day of study in your chosen field you will be a national expert in that field in five years or less.- Earl NightingaleIts easy to fall into the trap of obsessing over a final outcome- to look like that person with the fit body, successful business or bestselling books- whilst completely ignoring the years of consistency they put into their craftto get to that point. This type of outcome-oriented thinking is a recipe for paralysis from self-doubt andchronic procrastination.Instead, shift your focus towards what you can do consistently today, tomorrow and the next, that will bring you one step closer to that goal.By staying consistent and sticking to your goals, no matter how small, you can build the necessary self-confidence and skills to create the quality of work and life you desire.Believe In YourselfUltimately, youre the only person that can truly believe in yourself, nobody else can.The next time you struggle with self-doubt holding you back from success, ask yourself this powerful questionHow would the person Id like to be do the same thing Im about to do?Thensimply be and act like the type of person youd like to beregardless of the doubts running through your mind.Practice daily self-talk, cut the negativity from your life and focus on the consistent small steps- then youll be well on your way to achieving your dreams. This article first appeared on MayoOshin.com.Mayo Oshin writes atMayoOshin.com,where he shares well-researched ideas based on proven science, philosophy and the habits of highly successful people, for stress-free productivity. Caution Dont do any of these 4 things after a job interviewCaution Dont do any of these 4 things after a job interviewIts normal to feel a rollercoaster of emotions after a job interview, but there are certain things you just shouldnt do.Dont freak outSara McCord, a freelance writer and editor, writes in The Muse that you shouldnt drive yourself crazy when you havent been contacted yet about if you got the job. After writing about how anxious she was while waiting to hear back about one, how its not always wrong to be so in tune with it, and more, she mentions a method she uses.Your personal timeline will depend on your circumstances, but if I make it to the final round for any given job, I give myself one week when Im allowed to think about it non-stop. For an entire week, I dont apply to other jobs (assuming I dont have anything else in the works), almost as a show of confidence in myself, she writes. For the skeptics who think this means Ill miss my chance elsewhere, the second par t of the one-week rule is that, after a week, I go back to job-hunting business as usual, and pick up right where I left off.Dont cross social media boundariesOnce you do this, theres no going back.Fred Whelan and Gladys Stone, formerly of Whelan Stone Executive Search, write in Monster that you shouldnt friend the interviewer on Facebook.Whelan is currently retired and Stone now works as the Principal, Digital Technology Markets at Korn Ferry.Looking for an inspiring way to start your day?
